Jean-Pierre Conte Recalls the Lunch-Break Visit That Started His Career
Every interview slot was booked. Jean-Pierre Conte, then a student at Harvard Business School, wanted a full-time job with a private equity firm that was recruiting on campus, and there was no time left on its schedule.
He described what happened next in a July 30, 2026, interview with Authority Magazine, published on Medium. Conte, now founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, went to see the recruiter on a lunch break and introduced himself.
A Name the Recruiter Knew
His last name was recognized. Conte’s father was a tailor and clothing salesman in Manhattan, and his customers included Wall Street financiers. The recruiter was one of them.
“The recruiter was a customer of my father’s,” Conte told the magazine. “He bought his suits from my dad’s shop.”
He was hired for the job. That job started a private equity career that has now lasted decades.
What Stayed With Him
“The lesson I took from that has never left me,” he said. “Put yourself in the path of opportunity, even when the door looks closed.”
Showing up in person can open a door that seems shut, Conte said, and connections often reach further than people expect. A similar choice came after business school, when he joined a small San Francisco private equity firm, according to the interview.
Advice to Readers
Jean-Pierre Conte returned to the idea when the magazine asked for advice. His most important career turns, he said, came from choosing them himself.
“Take the risk of showing up,” he said.
Before Harvard
Conte began his finance career at Chase Manhattan Bank after college. He had graduated from Colgate University in 1985, the first in his family to attend college.
His father never went to college. The shop’s Wall Street clients “saw something in me and offered mentoring and advice,” Conte told the magazine. He has said in an earlier interview that their guidance helped him “fall in love with finance.”
Those clients “helped close the gap,”Jean-Pierre Conte wrote in a March 2025 Forbes Business Council column, meaning the information gap that first-generation students and professionals often face.
Where It Led
JP Conte told the magazine that his parents brought him to his career, even though neither of them worked in finance.
He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School before entering private equity. Colgate added him to its board of trustees in 2020. Lupine Crest Capital, the family office he founded, was launched in March 2025 and is based in Aspen, Colorado.
